Case Study: Lift Pump System Rebuild

Project Overview

  • Issue: Sewage backup into three site buildings
  • Scope: Assess lift station, rebuild if necessary, and test

Background Three buildings on the site were experiencing sewage backups in their campus area. The top of the lift station was severely rusted and damaged, and the suction stand pipes had holes in them. The existing control starters were malfunctioning and were approximately 30 years old.

Challenges

  1. Piping with holes in it.
  2. Failed pump.
  3. Malfunctioning controls.
  4. Rusted base causing a major safety hazard.

Implementation Process

Execution:

    • Removed the housing over the top of the system.
    • Removed both pumps and motors and cut out the top structure cover.
    • Installed a new top structure and framing using heavy gauge steel.
    • Replaced one of the pumps that would not pump.
    • Replaced the entire control system and floats.
    • Ran new electrical service to the pump system.
    • Reinstalled the housing structure over the top of the system.

Testing and Verification:

    • Restored power to the system and checked pumps and motors for proper phasing.
    • Tested and adjusted the floats for the system.
    • Tested the function of the pumps and the control system.

Results

  • Resolved the drainage problems in all three buildings by reworking the entire lift station.
  • Eliminated future hazards by replacing the sub-structure over the lift station.

Conclusion By replacing the existing damaged and non-working system, we alleviated future damage and blockages to the three buildings caused by backups. We also addressed the safety issues related to the rusted structural components.
