Problem: 1973 PCV (sidewinder) Trane chiller motor failed.  Upon disassembly, we discovered excessive end-play had allowed the 1st-stage impeller to rub against the diaphragm plate and the back of the impeller was extremely thin.

Solution: We removed the motor and sent it off for repair/refurbishment. A replacement  impeller was not available since the unit was over 40 years old, so original was repaired and rebuilt with epoxy.  The repaired impeller was spin-balanced, tested, and returned to service as the chiller compressor was reassembled.

Legacy: The owner was able to repair this chiller through their maintenance and repair budget, rather than replace with capital money.
